Social Media Abuzz with Mankato Pow Wow Photos This Weekend

The Mankato Annual Pow Wow was held this weekend. It was held September 18 through 20 at Land of Memories Park in Mankato, just off Hwy 169 South. Native American tribes from Canada and the United States joined the festivities. This was the 43rd annual event for the Mahkato Pow Wow. The event and celebration is also in memory of the 38 members of the Dakota tribe that were hanged in downtown Mankato, the largest mass hanging in US history. The Grand Ceremony was the central event of the celebration with color guards, dancers and veterans and eagle staff members present.

Four Sudanese children are orphaned after their village is massacred in the Second Sudanese Civil War. Consequently, they make an arduous and dangerous trek through the plains, enduring hardship, death and sacrifice all the way until they reach safety in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. Years later, these youths are among 3600 selected for resettlement in America, the one girl among them sent to Boston, while the three boys must to make a new life in Kansas City. Together, these young men must adjust to an alien culture even as the emotional baggage of their past haunts them.


Immigrant Art Open House

Hmong Story Quilt

The Freeborn County Arts Initiative, 224 S. Broadway Ave., Albert Lea, MN, will hold their Immigrant Art Open House on May 9th from 1-4 p.m. The show will run May 5th-June 28, 2015.

Items on display include two Hmong story quilts - one in Hmong and one in English, handmade pinatas, fine art and sculpture and other items on display - plus a few surprises according to sources.


In Memory of Wes Schuck: A Family Man, Mentor and Enthusiastic Dreamer

Wes Schuck was a dear friend and mentor. The publisher of Slanted Magazine SMAC owes much credit to Schuck. The original plan was to revive Static Magazine, but Wes became ill with cancer and wanted to move ahead with his dream of producing films. Slanted Mag is truly grateful to have evolved the magazine from the direction and vision that Schuck had as a young man living in Mankato and operating Two Fish Studios, a recording studio business. Schuck lived a full life, promoting music and later working on independent film projects.


End of Vita.Mn Magazine? Yes and the Star Tribune Buys City Pages

Yes it has been confirmed everyone. Vita.Mn, the Minneapolis arts and entertainment publication and competitor to rival City Pages, called it quits today. Here's the kicker: they actually bought City Pages! That's right. If you can't beat them then join them as the old saying goes. The historic City Pages magazine was previously owned by parent company, Village Voice Media from NYC, home of the heralded New York Village Voice magazine.

Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway Announces New Website

Just in time for the travel season, the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway announces the launching of its new updated website: Located along the Minnesota River, the Minnesota River Valley National Scenic Byway is a destination in itself. The Byway Alliance, a non-profit, has been promoting tourism in the Minnesota River Valley for nearly 20 years, and are excited about how the new website will help them in their efforts!

NEW ULM - The Irish Cultural Society of New Ulm celebrates it's 50th Anniversary of the St. Patrick's Day Parade on Tuesday, March 17. Step off is at 5 pm. The parade route begins at 3rd South Minnesota and marches the wrong way, up one-way Minnesota Street to the Glockespiel. The parade is the longest consecutive running Irish parade in the state.

This year, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Chieftans have bestowed the honor of Grand Marshal on Pat Kearney and crowned his daughter Emma, as the Irish Queen.

PLRAC and MN Citizens for the Arts Present Economic Study

A presentation in Mankato will take place on March 2, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. by the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council and Minnesota Citizens for the Arts regarding a new study on the health and impact of the nonprofit arts and culture sector. The presentation will be made at Room 215, Honsey Hall, Bethany Lutheran College, 700 Luther Drive, Mankato, followed by a discussion of the economic impact of the arts and culture in our 9-county region in southern MN. This includes the counties of: Blue Earth, Brown, Faribault, LeSueur, Martin, Nicollet, Sibley, Waseca and Watonwan.
