Historic New Ulm Popcorn Business Put to Rest Over Food Safety Issues

A historic New Ulm food business had to close up shop. A popcorn stand with a 100-year history in New Ulm was closed over food safety concerns, as the Mankato Gazette reports.

Last week, the Brown County Historical Society board made the decision to close it because upgrades due to regulation would be too expensive. The problem with the food stand was that it did not have hand washing or water capabilities for employees. Read the Mankato Gazette for more at

Wild rice harvesting season opens Aug. 15; most areas not yet ready

Minnesota’s wild rice harvesting season is open from Friday, Aug. 15, to Tuesday, Sept. 30. Despite the season dates, harvesters must first ensure the rice is ripe before launching their canoes, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Minnesota’s green rice law does not allow the harvesting of unripe rice, and the late spring means some rice stands may be slow to mature.

More than 1,200 lakes and rivers in 54 counties contain wild rice, with concentrations of rice being the highest in Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Itasca and St. Louis counties.

Father's Day Buffet at Lone Star Grille in Saint Peter

Lone Star BBQ

I have anxiously waited a long while to eat at Lone Star. You see, my wife doesn't eat BBQ. I do, and I love it!

It was Father's Day and my wife decided to give me a special treat, because I'm a new dad you see. So the buffet at Lone Star was it, and it happened to be a buffet at $20 per person. I did enjoy their tender brisket and succulent rib tips smothered in delicious barbecue sauce. I'm not sure if it qualifies as traditional Texas style BBQ or not, but it definitely was good for Minnesota's BBQ scene.
